Which age group is most commonly affected by pharyngitis?

Pharyngitis is most commonly affected in children and adolescents due to several reasons. This age group is particularly vulnerable to viral and bacterial infections that cause inflammation of the throat. The high incidence of viral illnesses, such as those caused by rhinoviruses, adenoviruses, and influenza viruses, often leads to pharyngitis in school-aged children and teenagers, who are in close contact with one another, facilitating the spread of infections.

Additionally, streptococcal pharyngitis, commonly known as strep throat, is prevalent among children, particularly those between ages 5 and 15. This demographic's immune systems are still developing, making them less equipped to fight off infections than healthy adults. Engagement in communal activities, like attending school, further increases their exposure to infectious agents.

While adults and the elderly can also experience pharyngitis, the rates of infection are typically lower in these populations.
